Maison Martin Margiela has just released their new Autumn/Winter12 Collection. Typically subversive and individual, this new collection offers a number of pieces that are inspired by black bin bags, turning an everyday object into a luxury garment. Alongside these avant-garde show pieces we have a range of fantastic basics including sweatshirts, shirts, and t-shirt.
Maison Martin Margiela 10 Show Down Gilet. The gilet is filled with goose down and is fantastically warm. Heat is also trapped by the high neck section, while a reference to its bin bag influences appear at the bottom hem, where there is an inbuilt cord to cinch in the hem. A shiny black finish, once again, gives a nod to the gilet’s origins.
Maison Martin Margiela 10 Double Faced Hoodie. The sweat is finished with a black pull-cord with robust toggles, and the iconic quad-stitch. Made in Italy from 100% cotton.
Maison Martin Margiela 10 Aids Awareness T-Shirt. For Autumn/Winter the t-shirt is produced in the traditional v-neck shape and a shade of washed brown. As ever, it bears slogan ‘There is more action to be done to fight aids than to wear this t-shirt but it’s a good start.’ A sentiment that we share.

Ever innovative with materials and techniques, the new Spring/Summer 12 collection by Maison Martin Margiela takes inspiration around the themes of illusion and deconstruction. The printed shirt, for example, has been created using a printing effect where the fabric is crushed and then printed upon, creating this unique finish.
Maison Martin Margiela Bleached Denim Jacket. This denim jacket is a classic trucker design, bleached bright and contemporary off-white. Cut from premium cotton, the jacket features two buttoned breast pockets and adjustments at the waist. In keeping with the brand’s deconstructionist heritage, the jacket boasts a series of studs down the front in place of traditional buttons and is finished with white buttons on the chest.
Maison Martin Margiela Regular Fit Printed Shirt. This regular-fitting shirt is cut from premium cotton that has been treated to hold its creases. The fabric is techno-coated in polyester to bear a foulard pattern, randomly broken due to the folds in the shirt fabric when it was printed. The shirt is finished with the signature Margiela quad-stitch on the rear.
Maison Martin Margiela Pocket Detail Henley. A regular-fitting Henley design, this short-sleeved t-shirt features a soft suede pocket on the chest. The pocket is intended for storing travel tickets or passes and, cut with a transparent window at its centre, is perfectly-suited to this function.

Belgian-born Martin Margiela founded Maison Martin Margiela in 1988 after graduating from Antwerp’s Royal Academy of Fine Art. The inspiration from the latest clothing range comes from deconstructionist fashion movement of the 1980s.
Maison Martin Margiela Bibbed Detail V-Neck Knit. This knit has undergone a process of deconstruction and re-assembly as part of something that Margiela call ‘Artisanal Industrial’, where contrasting production processes and materials are taken apart and then combine to create something altogether new.
Maison Martin Margiela Large Stripe T-Shirt. Contrasting colour printed sections are a recurring theme in this collection. This rich red t-shirt features a vertical stripe printed onto the t-shirt. The stripe has a slight gloss quality and makes the fabric it is printed onto slightly rigid. The t-shirt also has the signature Margiela quad stitch pattern on the back of the neck.
Maison Martin Margiela Washed Slim Fit Jeans. This classic five-pocket jean from Margiela is slim-fitting and has a number of signature Margiela design touches. Tarnished metal rivets strengthen the jean in key areas, while the button fly is fastened at the top by a triple-M branded button. There is also the Margeila quad stitch pattern on the rear.
